Invention Zine

In this project, we were randomly assigned objects that are seen very often in everyday life and abstracted them down to their basic shapes. With these abstractions, we were to have similar styles within the three icons in order to marry them all together. For my style, I decided to play around with mixing sharp and rounded ends of my icons. I chose simple shapes that didn't necessarily first come to mind. For instance, instead of using circles to form the telephone, I used rectangles and squares. For the accordion, we were to include a brief history of the inventors and how they invented these random objects.

Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell was a Scottish-born American who invented the telephone and refined the phonograph. He started by researching methods to transmit telegraphs through a single wire. While others were trying the same, Bell focused on the voice.

The Wright Brothers

Wilbur and Orville Wright were fascinated by aviation after their father brought home a gift of a helicopter made of bamboo and rubber bands. Years later, they followed aviator Otto Lilienthaz’s research and began their own after Lilienthaz’s accident.

Percy Spencer

Percy Spencer was a self-taught engineer who focused on radars but accidentally invented the microwave. While working on magnetrons on radar, he noticed a candy bar in his pocket began to melt. This led Spencer to further his research which led to the microwave.
